Toyota is fully aware that solar power represents a vital component of our shared future. As a much cleaner substitute for the fossil fuels that sustained the previous century, solar energy is imperative for environmental safety. To commemorate this ingenious and sustainable power source, Toyota has debuted the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, open for viewing at its Research & Development base in Michigan.

Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy

Forged from a joint initiative between Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this beautiful presentation merges solar science with magnificent colors. Going beyond pure aesthetic beauty, the exhibit actively produces power. Promoting independent eco-friendly power alternatives is paramount to keeping our society running smoothly as global fossil fuel reserves dwindle.

Assembled at 1/6th of its original scale, this zero-emission, independent model features 11 distinct three-sided columns. By utilizing lenticular lens technology, the developers were able to hide the underlying solar elements while retaining their power gathering capabilities. Essentially, the monument functions as a gorgeous creative sculpture and an active ecological advancement that yields power.

The story behind this impressive innovation began long ago. Although the project request arrived formally in 2020, the foundation of the technology was laid down more than a decade in the past. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, working as a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, shared that TMC launched experiments with nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years prior, intending to eventually pair them with solar energy panels.

While financed by TMC, APPO carried the banner for the North American auto market, tracking fiscal resources and promoting its commercial viability. Now, this Vivid colored solar system can be added to standard solar panels while preserving upwards of 90% of their initial electrical output.

Co-project leader Brian Woods shares the same level of enthusiasm regarding the real-world execution of the Vivid Solar display. "When you look at the applications for both exhibits and marketing, the return on investment potential is massive," he emphasizes, adding that this tech smoothly brings together an ecological energy option with limitless marketing opportunities.
