Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, extending its efforts well beyond the focus on electrifying its vehicle lineup. Improper disposal of automotive batteries poses significant environmental risks. Sadly, many of these batteries end up in landfills, exacerbating the pollution crisis. Moreover, the valuable materials within these batteries can be reclaimed and reused. Toyota's recent collaboration with Cirba Solutions aims to bolster its battery recycling network. With over 60 years of expertise, Cirba Solutions manages the entire process, from collecting used batteries to extracting crucial elements.
This partnership, joining Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions, expands the automaker's recycling network, encompassing BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts an impressive 95% recovery rate for critical element extraction, reducing costs for Toyota and advancing its aim of achieving a closed-loop system for battery recycling. Recently, Cirba Solutions received a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, enhancing its facility in Lancaster, Ohio. Here, the company will extract battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries, reintegrating them into the supply chain for future use in EVs.
